London Doulas was set up in 2009 by Jessica Thornton & Sarah Rowles. Both doulas had been practicing individually for a while and with continuity of care being paramount to both of them, neither were happy to increase the number of families they supported alone (approx one per month). They decided to start offering another option to families known as 'shared care'. With a shared care both doulas would do all of their visits antenatally and postnatally together and whoever had the better availability on the day would attend the birth, thus ensuring that each family still had familiarity throughout. The shared care option quickly became very popular which was fortunate as the significant upturn in enquiries in recent years has lead to it becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with their demand. Both Jessie and Sarah continue to work as birth doulas either individually or as shared care and on occasion, at the parents request, have even attended births together.
